Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann.

Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann. Elisabeth was born on December 19, 1916, in Berlin, Germany. At the age of 19, she became involved with National Socialist student organizations and participated mainly in ideological writings. She studied journalism in Berlin. Later, she traveled to the United States to further her studies at the University of Missouri. She studied philosophy and history in Königsberg and Munich.

On June 8, 1941, she published an article in Das Reich entitled ‘Who Informs America?’, in which she propagated the myth that a Jewish syndicate controlled the American media. She wrote: “The Jews write in the newspapers, they are the owners; moreover, they have virtually monopolized the propaganda agencies and can, therefore, open or close the doors to incoming propaganda as they wish.”

She then began working as a columnist for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung until 1943. In 1947, together with her husband Hubert Neumann, she founded the Institut für Demoskopie Allensbach, which is still the most prestigious polling organization in Germany. In 1964, she was awarded a professorship in journalism at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. There she founded the Institut für Publizistik and was its director until 1983. From 1978 to 1980, she was president of the World Association for Public Opinion Research and worked as a visiting professor at the Universities of Chicago and Munich.

Su contribución más grande es el modelo de la espiral del silencio, detallado en The Spiral of Silence: Public Opinion—Our Social Skin (1984). Su teoría: La espiral del silencio

Her greatest contribution is the Spiral of Silence model, detailed in The Spiral of Silence: Public Opinion—Our Social Skin (1984). Her theory: The Spiral of Silence

Elisabeth worked on the formation and evolution of public opinion and argues that dominant currents of opinion, or those perceived as prevailing, generate an attraction effect that increases their strength, thereby threatening the minority, as it reinforces the majority and, at the same time, increases the fear of isolation and exclusion among those who hold minority opinions. These minorities prefer to remain silent in society for fear of confronting the opinion of the majority.

It would be like fighting against the current or ‘standing like a wall’ in the face of an enemy onslaught. And this happens, as Elisabeth argues, because people have a perceptive sense of evaluation of the ideological environment, of the fashions of opinion and of the values that constitute majority and minority values.

The role of the media is significant, insofar as their agenda values and their role as enablers of presence or prominence contribute to the social perception of majority or politically correct opinion climates. The media, through their content, contribute to establishing the public space for debate and, with it, the framework in which public opinion develops. The media’s silences and their concealment of reality lead to the disappearance from the scene of those values and protagonists that have lost their published or broadcast footprint.

The effects of the media are, according to Noelle-Neumann, cumulative, so that their impact on opinion is not immediate, but is forged and consolidated according to the number of media outlets that endorse a position and the length of time they persist in that position. This means that the accumulation of ideas that are transmitted makes a dent in the way of thinking of the majority of society, thus achieving a majority way of thinking that is opposed to the thinking of some individuals, who thus become isolated, marginalized, and rejected, preferring to remain in the anonymity of silence and thereby entering the spiral of silence.
